Bottom 2, Al Kaline singled leading off and one batter later, Bill a Freehan filled the homer column of the stat sheet with a two run blast. Bottom 4, Jim Borthruo doubled to right center and raced home on a Freehan single. Two walks loaded the bases but the Tigers couldn’t add to the lead letting Lopez off the hook. Things were quiet thru the middle innings, the Angels mounting a promising threat in the 7th when Don Mincher and Jimmy Hall singled but Earl Wilson buckled down to put the fire out. Top 8, Jim Fregosi broke the shutout with his first bomb of the season. Bottom 8, the Bengals put this one away off Pete Camino. A one out walk to Oyler followed by singles by Dick McAuliffe and Earl Wilson put the lead back at 3. One out later Don Wert collected his 5th RBI. The Tribe waste a lead off single opening the game. Bottom on 1st started ominously as Gus Gil booted a routine three hopper. Singles by Rich Rollins and Tony Oliva put the Twinkies on the board. Killebrew skied out for the first out the Suddenly Sam lost the plate filling the bases then forcing in the second run. Just trying to get one over the plate, Earl Battey jumped on the meatball to a 2 run single. A Carew sac fly capped the runs collected at 5. Grant did not have his best stuff, narrowly escaping the 3rd leaving the bases full. He got touched up for a run in the 5th when Davalillo and Alvis doubled breaking the whitewash attempt. McDowell righted himself after the tumultuous first, getting the last 12 he faced. Top 6, Grant flirted with trouble, walking Fred Whitfield while Leon Wagner and Duke Sims singled for a second Cleveland run. That was enough for skipper Sam Mele who tapoed Ron Kline to clean things up. Top 3, Peters served up a long fly to a Kenny McMullen to trim the lead. Bottom 4, the Pale Hose opened the frame with four consecutive singles, Hansen and Peters once again collecting RBIs. Both pitchers had their A game fully in force. First scoring opportunity came in the top of the 3rd when Paul Casanova ripped one down the left field line, hugging the wall and escaping LF Pete Ward. Alas, he was left chatting with 3rd base coach Eddie Yost as Ortega whiffed and Brinkman tapped you the box. The Chisox threatened in the 5th, Pete Ward laced a grounds rule double to right but Ortega fingered the resin bag, scraped his spikes, took a deep breath and got the next two to keep it scoreless. Horlen breezed Until they top of the 9th when Brinkman dunked a double into left center. Horlen buckled down to escape damage. The Sox went quietly in the 9th making bonus baseball necessary.
