The Tigers headed south to the city of a thousand nicknames. Detroit got off to a nice start so far while KC is still feeling their way. Twenty game winner Denny McLain face neophyte Johnny “Blue Moon” Odom in the front side of a twin bill. Both teams got their lead off batters on in the 1st and both failed to score. Detroit broke out in front in the 3rd when Odom lost the plate after registering the first two outs. Two walks sandwiched a single putting three ducks on the pond for Al Kaline. Al ripped a base hit to center plating a pair. KC responded with one of their own in the bottom of the inning Bert Campaneris singles and Mike Hershberger walked and one out later Ed Charles picked up an RBI with a base knock. Top 5, Detroit got that run back when Dick McAulliffe walked and Gates Brown singled proving Kaline another run scoring opportunity of which he delivered. Top 7, the Bengals chased Odom who once again disagreed with home plate umpire Jerry Neudecker’s strike zone. Breaking the cardinal run by walking McLain, he scored on a single by Don Wert. Odom walked two more before Manager Al Dark could get him out of there. Paul Lindblad came on the whiff Jim Northrup with the sacks filled to stem the trouble. Bottom 8 the A’s touched up McLain fir two singles with 2 out prompting Mgr Mayo Smith to bring in Fred Gladding. Fred was greeted by a two run double by Dick Green before settling down getting the last 5 to preserve Denny’s second win.
