The start of a big 5 game set in Beantown, game one featuring the aces of each staff. An RBI single got the visitors going early but Yaz countered with a clutch homer into the bullpen to tie the score. The Sox took the lead in the 8th and Jom Lonborg fought fatigue in the 9th, inducing a DP ball, going the route and win the opener.

The Orioles had a shot to tie in the 8th when Paul Blair legged out a three bagger only to be stander when John Hiller came on the get Boog Powell on a fly to shallow fly to right.

A critical error by Zolio Versalles in the 5th opened up the floodgates and allow the Yankees to build a 4-0 lead, which was far more than enough for Mel Stottlemyre who went the route scattering 6 hits while whitewashing the Twinkies. His battery mate, Jake Gibbs provided all the offense needed as the Yanks svoid being swept salvaging the getaway game.

Home runs were the deciding factor in this game one of a double dip. After four scoreless innings, the Twins plated runs in the 5th and 6th, he big blow a two run shot by Bob Allison. Yanks made it a game on a Bill Robinson homer but in the end, Jim Merritt with an assist by Al Worthington put this in the left column for the visitors.
