A good old fashioned pitchers duel thru seven as both George Brunet and Joe Coleman matched goose eggs. Top 8, Coleman got two quick outs before running out of gas surrendering the runs needed to give the visitors the victory. George Brunet allied just three baserunners (all singles) on the way to securing his first shutout of the season.

The Twins looked to salvage a game out of this series and were heartened when Bob Allison put them up 2-0. The lead evaporated when Rico Petrocelli doubled in the 7th, forcing this one into extra innings. The Twins had chances in each bonus frame but were denied. The Sox put them out of their misery in the 12th when seldom used Russ Gibson won it with a base knock!

The nightcap of the double dip turned out to be a marathon of 15 innings. A tie game thru 6 thanks to a Yaz dinger, the Twins opened up a big lead on a Zolio Versalles homer. But the Sox roared back with 4 to take the lead sending 9 to the plate. Rich Reese pinch hit a homer to it into overhead when a Twins miscue gifted the Six the win and sweep.

The Bosox erupted for foyer runs off Jim Kaat in the 6th erasing a 2-0 deficit. Joe Foy and Tony Conigliaro had the big blows to establish the lead. The Twins fought back coming within one run twice, and had the bases loaded off Johnny Wyatt but Rich Rollins could not play the hero, meekly flying out to center to end the game.

NOTES: Gary Peters gave up just two hits, unfortunately both went yard. He had not given up a hit before Wilson schooled him. Ken Berry’s walk off was his first since July 2nd. Pinch hitter par excellence is having a very tough year, stuck in an 0-21 hole and hasn’t had a hit in two months. Al Kaline returned to the lineup going 0-3 with a walk. Jerry Lumpe picked up his team leading 7th pinch hit, batting .318 in that role.
