After the Sox picked up a run in the boot I’m of the third, the Bengals jumped ahead only to be knotted up by a Boyer homer. Bottom of the 7th, pinch hitter extraordinaire Smokey Burgess provided the margin of victory giving the home club the first three of this series.

Veteran Stan Williams also pitched well in his reprieve from the bush leagues but came out on the shirt end.

Mark Belanger filled in at both keystone positions in all four games, rewarding Hank Bauer with a hit in each contest. Moe Drabowsky did not allow a run in July covering a dozen appearances. Marcy Lopez, who came over at the trade deadline for Woody Held, made his first big league appearance since April 23rd. Max Alvis hit three bombs in the four game set.

Larry Brown was the only Tribesman left out of the hits party, but he did reach base 3 times (2walks and an error). Bill Dillman made his first start in July as he recovers from a chest muscle strain. Brooks Robinson ripped his league leading 25th double.

The Yanks put up a four spot in the 4th off Lew Krausse as the first six batters reached base highlighted by a Bill Robinson homer and a Charley Smith triple. The Athletics had their chances off Steve Barber who seemingly was on the ropes in each and every inning only to be Houdini while going the distance with 9 hit shutout.

Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter singlehandedly beat the Yanks on this one, pitching 7 strong innings then blasting a homer that proved to be the deciding run. Tony Pierce came in in relief to fan Joe Pepitone with the bases loaded to give Catfish and the Athletics the win.
