Sunday, sunshine and a doubleheader in SoCal, what more can you ask for? The Orioles look to continue their ingested road trip sending Dave McNally to the hill to duel with journeyman George Brunet.
The Birds come flying out of the gate as Luis Aparicio singled with one out and Frank Robinson put one in the seats in left for a quick 2-0 lead. Bottom 2, two out singles by Don Mincher and Bobby Knoop went to waste. Top 3, Brooks upheld the great Robinson name by matching Franks blast upping the lead to 3. The wind musta have been blowing out because top 5, after Curt Blefary walk Frank deposited his second beyond the fence for a 5-0 lead. Mgr Bill Rigney ended Brunet misery after 5 battered innings. Top 6, Paul Blair greeted Jim Coates with a triple and waltzed home of a deep fly by Andy Etchabarren. Bottom 6, McNally appeared to tire as he lost the plate, issuing free passes to Jim Fregosi and Hay Johnstone. Rick Reichardt singled to break through and Jose Cardenal brought a second with a fly to left. McNally settled down to get out of the inning while Moe Drabowsky heated in the pen. The Birds got those two back off Lew Burnett’s on a single by Blair and a homer by Etchabarren. Drabowsky came on in the 7th collecting a nice tidy 9 out save. Orioles winning streak up to 4 while the A’s have not won since opening day.
