An old fashioned pitching duel erupted on the south side as George Brunet battled Joe Horlen who was gunning for his 20th win. The Sox broke thru first as Pete Ward scored on a JC Martin but Roger Repoz evened the contest by going deep. In the end, Minnie Rojas faced only two batters before walking off the mound as the losing pitcher.

This game was essentially over in the bottom of the second when Dick McAuliffe touched home plate after crushing a grand slam off Ricardo Rodriguez. The Athletics got within 3 but the Bengals then put up their second 5 run inning of the game off Jack Aker, giving the nightcap to the home club.

Then the bottom fell out on Pete Richert as the Cherubs sent 11 men to the plate, tallying 7 runs capped off by a three run blast by Rick Reichardt off Eddie Watt. Three Angel relievers held off the visitors to snare the opening game of the second doubleheader in two days.
