The Orioles got off to a fast start once again, Aparicio singled and eluded a strong throw by Freehan to swipe his first base of the season, Russ Snyder promptly singled him home. Frank Robby singled fir 1st and second, keeping the rally going. Brooks flied to right and Boog sliced one toward third and inexplicably Don Wert booted it allowing a second run, ruining a sure double play ball. Wilson shook that off by fanning the next two to escape further damage. Bottom 1, Palmer issued two, one out walks setting the stage for a a Northrup RBI single. Bottom 2, the Bengals tied it up as Oalmer’s wildness, or Home plate umpire Bill Kinnamon tight strike zone first filled the bases then forced on the knitting run. Things were quiet until the 5th when Snyder and Frank singled and both raced hone on a double by Brooks. Top 6, Wilson bore the wrath of the shrinking strike zone walking in the a run Norm Cash went upper deck to narrow the lead again, ending Palmer’s afternoon. The final run scored in the 8th when a double, walk and scratch single loaded the bases. Brooks got an RBI the hard way, taking one in the back. Meanwhile, The home club were even more anemic against Horlen who kept a no-hitter alive until two outs into the 8th when Vic Davalillo snuck one through the infield for a hit. Sox go in order in their part of the 1st. Bottom 1 the twins collected three singles but could not produce a tally. Top 2, Scott walked and Tony C reed off on Grant putting the visitors up 2-0. Yaz doubled in the third but got left stranded. Bottom 3, Cesar Tovar snuck one around the foul pole to cut their deficit in half. The Sox tried to get that one back but ultimately wasted a pair of hits. History repeated itself on the 5th on the Sox abandoning a pair of knocks. Bottom 5, Ron Clark muscled up to tie the game at 2. Then two errors and a two out single by Killebrew put the home club ahead. The Orioles fly into Motown for the weekend, looking to build on their recent momentum. They have their work cut out for themselves, as the face a Mickey Lolich who has been brilliant. Steve Barber is his opposition, coming off his best start of the season.

Top 1, the pesky Luis Aparicio drew a walk and moved to 3rd on a two out single by Brooks Robinson. Woody Held drove one into left for the first run and Davy Johnson and Paul Blair followed suit giving Barber a cozy 3-0 lead. Top 2, Aparicio was at it again, as he dropped one into the second row of the bleachers after a Blefary single bumping the lead to 5-0. Barber faired better, putting up goose eggs thru 4. Top 5, Blefary walked and Frank Robinson went upper deck off of George Korrince who took over for Lolich in the 4th. Kaline singled in a run in the 5th, the first crack in the armor of Barber. Bottom 7, the Bengals pecked away gathering 2 more on RBI singles by McAuliffe and Kaline. It’s the rubber game of this three game set. The eternal prospect Nick Willhite gets the ball from Bill Rigney to face Jim Lonborg who searches for his fourth duke.

Sox are held scoreless in the 1st. Bottom one, the Sultan of West Coast Swat, Paul Schaal, picked on the second offering by Lonborg, sending it into the left field seats for 1-0 lead. Bottom 2, the Halos doubled the lead when Jimmie Hall walked and Mincher singled. Buck Rodgers snuck one into the outfield for an RBI. Bottom 3, with Lonborg clearly not having it, gave up a single to Fregosi the walked Reichardt one out later. Hall skied you center but Mincher lazered one over the of Conigliaro, eluding the right fielder long enough for 2 runs to score and Big Don ending up on 3rd. Willhite, for his part, Houdinied his way out of jams in each of the first 5 innings. Two singled in the 2nd got snuffed out by a twin killing, then in the 4th, two singles sandwiched a walk for sacks full with nobody out. Willhite the fanned the next three to escape. In fact, Nick the Quick punched out the side the next inning for good measure. The Cherubs missed out on a golden opportunity when the wasted a lead off double by Fregosi. Top 6, Yaz singled but Willhite righted himself to get the next 2. Petrocelli singled and Gibson walked to load Em up. Mike Andrews ripped a grounds rule double getting the Sawx on the board. Tony Horton pinch hit for Lonborg and Rigney countered with Pete Cimino. Bad move as Horton blasted a three run shot for a one run Boston lead. Top 7., Bill Kelso walked the bases loaded but got a lazy fly ball to end the inning. Veteran Don McMahon shut the door to give the series to the visitors.

Lonborg got his fourth win despite his under-par outing. Joe Foy has an 11 game hitting streak, in fact hitting safely in every game he played. Fregosi had a big game for the Angels breaking 1-17 skid. Jimmy Hall is the current concern, enduring a 0-21 slump.

The back end of a short two game set. Twins looking to square the series with the Bronx team. Two struggling righties get after it in this one,

Boswell started out on fire whiffing the side in the 1st. Talbot set the Twins down in order in the bottom half. Top 2 and error and a walk set up the Yanks nicely but nothing came of it. Talbot was perfect again in the bottom half. Top 3, Talbot drew a walk and the Punch and Judy hitting Horace Clarke put the visitors ahead but ‘ punching’ one into the seats in right, Ron Clark, still subbing for Rich Rollins, teed off on Talbot to halve the lead. The Pinstripers got to Boswell again in the 5th as Dave was not able to abide by the strike zone walking Clarke. Tresh followed by lashing one over the head of Kosco in right, plating Hoss and ending up on third. Mantle was walked somewhat intentionally setting up the DP which they almost got as Whitaker grounded to short, just barely beating the relay for the fourth run. The Twins nickel Talbot for another run in the 6th, pinch hitter Sandy Valdespino blasting one out to right. Bottom 7, the home club crawled within one as Allison singled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a Russ Nixon single. That was enough for Ralph Houk as he brought in Steve Hamilton to face Clark, inducing a twin killing to preserve the slim lead. The Tanks added an insurance run off Ron Kline , Bill Robinson doubled and Billy Bryan picked a good time FOR his first hit and RBI. The Twins erupted in the bottom of the 8th, three consecutive singles produced the tying run. Versalles lined out but Killebrew and Allison followed with knocks to put the Twinkies up 2. Al Worthington came on to preserve to leaf and well…. Tresh singled and advance on an error by Allison. Mantle singled him home to make a game of it. Worthington settled down to get the next two but left a hanger in Charley Smith’s wheelhouse that even he could not miss giving the Yankx a 2 run lead. Dooley Womack came on for the save and was greeted rudely by Ron Clark who went deep for the second time in the game but, alas, it was where it would end.

Peters started out unable to find the strike zone, walking the first two Bengals before a pep talk from catcher JC Martin squared him away. Sox in their half loaded the bases on two singles and a walk but Ken Berry grounded out, snuffing out the rally. Tigers put two more on in the 2nd to no avail. Bottom 4, Tommy McCraw singled and timed McLain’s delivery perfectly and swiped second. Berry then singled him in for the games first run. Peters handled the visitors, his only issue was with Larry Napp’s strike zone and he issued six free passes.
