A twin bill scheduled here on the South Side of Chicago. Two experienced righthanders who knows their way around a fastball and curve duel on a very pleasant spring Sunday. Both pitchers had their A game fully in force. First scoring opportunity came in the top of the 3rd when Paul Casanova ripped one down the left field line, hugging the wall and escaping LF Pete Ward. Alas, he was left chatting with 3rd base coach Eddie Yost as Ortega whiffed and Brinkman tapped you the box. The Chisox threatened in the 5th, Pete Ward laced a grounds rule double to right but Ortega fingered the resin bag, scraped his spikes, took a deep breath and got the next two to keep it scoreless. Horlen breezed Until they top of the 9th when Brinkman dunked a double into left center. Horlen buckled down to escape damage. The Sox went quietly in the 9th making bonus baseball necessary. The Sens went in order in the 10th. Bottom 10, Ortega got JC Martin and Hansen but Dick Kenworthy pinch hit a single. Don Buford sent the crowd of 9,189 to the concession stands, ending it with a screamer into the right field sets, breaking Ortega’s heart in the process.
