Cleveland looks to close out their trip to Disney with another win while the Halo‘s try to get off the schneid. Veteran Gary Bell takes on neophyte Jim McGlothlin, their prize young hurler. McGlothlin made the Tribe believers of his ability only allowing a hit and two free passes in the first 8 innings. Gary Bell did not fare as well. He got the side in order in the 1st but three consecutive singles greeted him in the 2nd giving the home team the lead, Cardenal driving in the run. Top 3 came unraveled after 2 outs when Bell walked Jay Johnstone. Rick Reichardt followed with a single bring Don Mincher to the plate. Big Don did what he was aquired for, driving a moon shot into the right center bleachers making the score 4-0. Cardenal followed with a three bagger off the rattled righty jogging home on a single by Buck Rodgers. A walk, a hit batsman and an error provided the Angels their final run. McGlothlin entered the 9th looking for the shutout but was denied when Chuck Hinton homered, closing out the scoring at 6-2. Angels put one in the left column while the visitors fall to 1-2.

Second game of this two game set, O’s looking to escape with a pair of victories. Kaycee looking to get back to winning ways. Two promising righthanders go in this tilt. Top one, Frank Robinson doubled with 2 outs but Brooks failed to deliver. Bert Campaneris lead off their part of first with a sharp single then successfully tested Andy Etchabarren’s arm. Two outs later, The Glider, Ed Charles stroked a single for the initial run of the game. The second and third were quiet for both teams. Top 4, Paul Blair single leading off. He got on his horse and galloped home on a Frank Robby triple, tying the game. Catfish got Brooks looking and with the infield back, Powell rolled out to second giving the Birds the lead. The advantage did not last long, four consecutive one out singles tied the game, the last being a dribbler down third by Phil Roof. He knows, it still looks like a line drive in the box score. That would be that last of the scoring in regulation by both teams. Hunter was batted for in the 9th which brought in Jack Aker. Blefary fanned but Davey Johnson delivered a go ahead bomb putting Baltimore ahead. A double and two walks filled the sacks as the Birds tried to put the fame away. Alas, Frank Robby got robbed by Campy ending the inning. Bottom 10, the A’s had a chance to tie as Mike Hershberger doubled with one out but Eddie Watt settled down preserving the victory.

Angels continue their home stand hoping for better results with the Indians in town. Cuban fireballer Luis Tiant duels with grizzled veteran Jack Sanford. Former Halo Leon Wagner broke open the scoring with a long home run to right. The Tribe added two more in the 2nd when after 2 outs, Duke Sims doubled down the right field line. Larry Brown singled but Sims was held at third S Brown snuck into second. Luis Tiant ripped a single to plate the pair. Bottom 2, Rick Reinhardt singled and raced home in a one out double by Jose Cardenal. The Indians loaded the bases in the 4th, Sanford let off the hook when Tiant ripped into a DP. Bottom 4, the home team wasted a two out triple by Cardenal. In the 5th, Sanford got Davillilo but his luck ran out. Two singles and a hit batsman loaded the bases, that is, until Chuck Hinton cleared them with a triple breaking open the game. Another old timer relieved Sanford, Lew Burnett’s, who grooved one that Sims did not miss. Three homers rounded out the scoring, Knoop for the Angels and Alvis and Whitfield for the visitors.

Same in bottom of 2, a twin killing ruining the chance to score. Bottom 3, Krausse drew a walk and stole second. One out later, Mike Hershberger singled, driving Lew in. A single and a walk loaded the pads. The threat was snuffed out at the plate with Hershberger nailed at the plate trying to score on a great throw by Frank Robby. The Orioles evened the score in the 4th as the Robinson’s singled putting runners on the corners. Powell ripped one up the middle, Krausse slowing it down enough to just get on with a run scoring. Spring has arrived in the land of 1000 lakes as baseball has returned to the Met! A pair of righty’s go in this bout. Tigers arrive fresh off two wins in SoCal while the home team split a pair in Baltimore. Nothing in the top of the first. Tony Oliva solved Earl Wilson slamming his first round tripper to put the Twins ahead. The Tigers answered back quickly as Boswell had trouble finding the plate. Two walks sandwiches a Northrup singe to load the bases. Versailles booted them next ball tying the game. Tracewski walked for a second run. A Don Wert sac fly made it 3-1. Detroit added a pair in the third as Boswell continued to be wild. Kaline singled with one out and Northrup walked. Cash got one home with a base knock. Freehan took a stroll to fill the sacks with a Tracewski picking up his second ribby on a sac fly. Oliva powered his second dinger an inning later. All stayed quiet until Gates Brown found the seats off Dwight Siebler providing much a needed cushion. After Oliva’s homer, Wilson kept the Twins hitless until the 8th. With one out, Rollins reached in an error and scooted to third on an Oliva double. Killebrew was intentionally passed which ended Wildon’s day. Hank Aguirre came on to fan Carew but Mayo Smith left him in one batter too long as Bobby Allison singled to drive in two putting running on 2nd and 3rd. Earl Battey came up with the chance to be a hero but like the Mighty Casey, he struck out ending Minnesota’s last chance as they fall to 1-2. The Tigers surge to a perfect 3-0

Yanks come home to open the Big Ball Orchard in the South Bronx hoping to eradicate the memory of last year’s cellar dwelling. A underwhelming crowd of 14,375 watched a matchup of the old and new as Billy Rohr faced off against Whitey Ford. The Chairman of the Board got the Sox in order to open the festivities. Bottom 1, Horace Clarke singled and stole second. Red hot Bill Robinson brought him home to open the scoring. A pair of walks loaded the bases for Ellie Howard. Unfortunately, Ellie picked the biggest part of the yard to hit it to, generating a 420 ft sac fly. Whitey cruised thru the second but Petrocelli went yard to cut the lead in half. Sox put two more on but Ford got Yaz swinging on a ‘cut’ fastball. Yanks left 2 on in the 3rd but added three in the 4th. John Kennedy walked and Slick bunted him along allowing Clarke to single him home. Robinson got nicked by a pitch setting up Pepitone and Howard with RBI’s. The old man could not stand prosperity, promptly allowing three singles to Tony Horton with the RBI. A force out brought in another. Hour showed confidence in his veteran who disappointed giving up a three bagger to Joe Foy making it a one run game. Left in to face lefty Yaz, Ford got a 4-2-5 force but the relief was short lived as Tony C tied it with a double. Thad Tillison finally came in but fared no better. Two singles got things going for the Beantowners. After a twin killing, Tony Horton (who remained in the game) laced a double down the line for the lead, scoring on Reggie Smith ensuing single. Reggie Smith’s two run blast into the right field bleachers padded the lead. Lee Stange pitched the final five innings with little trouble getting a well deserved win.
