The Twins find themselves settling in on the shores of Lake Erie to a pair of contests against the home town Indians. Both teams are hovering the .500 mark early this season. Former tribesman Mudcat Grant faces his former team who respond back with second year hurler Steve Hargan,

Both teams went in order in the first. Top 2, Killebrew drew a walk and Allison singled putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Versalles whiffed but Rollins ripped one over the head of the center fielder chasing in the baseman. Bottom 3, The home club left a pair of singles on . Top 4, the Twinkies wasted a one out triple by Versalles. Bottom 4, Leon Wagner doubled with one out and one out later, slugging backstop Duke Sims drove one over the chain link fence in right tying the game. Bottom 5, Steve Hargan gave himself the lead blasting a Grant offering over the fence in left. Cleveland seemingly put the game away in the 7th off Jim Merritt who came on for his 1967 debut. Sims walked and moved to 3rd on a Larry Brown double. Hargan whiffed for the second out and Merritt looked like he could escape unscathed. But he left a hanger to Davalillo who made it a souvenir upping the lead to 6-4. Alvis followed with a 2 bagger and rounded 3rd trying to score on a single by Hinton, but a strong peg by Tovar in center cut down the rally. Top 8, the Twins fought back, Bobby Allison taking advantage of the ballpark’s new dimensions cutting the deficit to 2. Sonny Siebert came in to collect the last four outs needed to secure the win for Hargan and the home team. Chuck Hinton extended his hitting streak to 20 games,

After splitting a four game set in Charm City, the A’s make their way westward, stopping off in Detroit trying to end the road trip on a high note. The home club looks to continue their excellent start to the season.Nthing doing in the first by both teams, Top 2 Roger Repoz one bounced the seats in right for a grounds rule double. Ed Charles singled him home to open the scoring. Tim Talton, getting the spot start behind the dish, ripped one in the gap in left center that rolled all the way to the wall, chasing Charles home and winding up on third with a stand up triple. Dick Green left him stranded, watching strike three all the way into Freehan’s mitt. Sparma then gifted the A’s their third run, uncorking a wild pitch, Talton scampering home. The Bengals got one back immediately as Norm Cash singled and with two outs Ray Oyler poked one over Gosger’s head in left for a two bagger. Things settled down until the bottom of the 5th when Freehan powered his second home making this a one run game. Detroit tied it up in the 6th, Kaline doubled with 2 outs and Jim Northrup singled him in, top 7, Charles picked up his second single and Talton walked setting the stage for a rally. Green flied to right. Sensing a chance for runs, Mgr Al Dark sent lefty slugger Ramon Webster to pinch hit, and Ramon almost made the skipper look like a genius but alas, Kaline corralled his high fly in deep right center. Bottom half of the inning, newly recalled Roberto Rodriguez came on and the a Tigers greeted him rudely. Freehan singled and Ray Oyler, who barely hits his weight, snuck one down the left field line giving the hone club their first lead. Jerry Lumpe and Dick McAuiliffe singled and Dark saw enough bringing in Paul Lindblad to clean up the mess. He got Wert on a fly, whiffed Gates Brown and got Kaline to roll to second. Larry Sherry came on to get six outs, notching his first save of the year.

The West Coast ball club continues traveling East, looking for better results than what was achieved in Cleveland where they lost three of four. The hosts, themselves, look to overcome the disappointing split of the weekend encounters.

Thus one is shaping up as a true pitchers duel, sophomore Tom Phoebus keeping the Halos off the board leaving multiple runners on in three of the first 4 frames. Journeyman George Brunet faced the minimum Birds through 4, only a walk to Aparicio tainting his dealings. Brooks got the first safety off Brunet and Boog followed with one of his own. A force and double play erased that opportunity. Phoebus for his part, got 12 in a row in the middle innings. Bottom 7, Aparicio lead off with a hustle double. Frank Robby drew a walk putting 2 on, posing a real threat. Brooks and Boog skied out bringing up Davy Johnson who ripped one down the line in left driving in the two runners and putting the O’s on top. Phoebus was still dealing in the 8, whiffing the first 2 batters before walking Paul Schaal. Early Player Of The Month candidate Jim Fregosi rocketed one over the head of Blefary in left, chasing Schaal home and head first sliding into third making this a one run game. Mgr Bauer took the ball from a tiring Phoebus, bringing in Moe Drabowsky with the tying run 90 feet away and lead run coming to the plate in the form of Jay Johnstone. Jay had no chance, whiffing to end the inning. Moe set the Cherubs down on order in the 9th saving Tommy’s third win. California now has lost four straight. Fregosi’s three bagger stretched his hitting streak to 8 games. Once again Brunet notched a quality start only to fall short.

It’s time for the back end of this short two game set. Both the hone team it’s starting pitcher are looking for redemption as both have had miserable starts. Hank Fischer comes out if the pen to make the spot start for the visitors. Top 2, Reggie Smith benefited from the poor Senator outfield defense, garnering a triple on what should have been a single. Dalton Jones singled, collecting the very valuable two out RBI. In the 3rd, George Scott, relishing in his return to the lineup, blasted one into the left field seats bumping the lead to 5-0. Bob Humphreys tossed two scoreless after taking over for Richert but Dick Lines was not as fortunate. Yaz singled in the 7th, and lo and behold, Petrocelli collected the Sox third triple of the game. The scoring concluded on the top of the 9th off Darrell Knowles. Smith singled and raced home on a two out double by Conigliaro and then danced hone on another hit by Rico. Hank Fischer went the distance, scattering 8 base runners, only once did a runner reach 2nd. The Senators have not won since game 2 of the season, losing streak reaching 9 while heading in the right direction, the a Sox have won their fifth in a row. Interesting, the Bosox had two players who threatened the cycle, both just a double short or nirvana.

Start of a 2 game set in DC. Boy do the Nats need a W in the worst way. Veteran Cuban hurler Camilo Pascual returnsto the Nations Capital hoping to stabilize the starting rotation. He faces southpaw Dennis Bennett.

Pascual came of firing, whiffing the first two batters then left a hanging curve right in Carl Yastrzemski’s wheelhouse, putting the Sox up 1-0. The Sens got that back immediately as Eddie Brinkman & Tim Cullen singled. Hank Allen followed with a base hit scoring Brinkman but Cullen got cut down trying for third. Top 2, George Thomas singled and advanced on a wild pitch. George Scott returning to the lineup after 4 games, doubled for the lead. Bottom 2, Cap Peterson singles and two outs later scored from second on a knock by Paul Casanova. Neither team put up a tally in the 3rd but the top of the 4th, three singles loaded the bases and Dennis Bennett drove in a pair for the lead. Hondo knock in one in the 5th making it a one run contest. Mgr Dick Williams sent Bennett out for the 6th and quickly regretted it. Hawk Harrelson singled and McMullen drew walk, making a pitching change necessary. Casanova bounced out moving the runners up. Bob Chance pinch hit and sent one to right. 3rd base coach Eddie Yost sent Harrelson who was dead at the plate. Twice now Thomas gunned down a potential run, this one would have tied the game. The Beantowners nicked the DC club’s relievers for runs in the 8th and 9th, Russ Gibson doubling a second time for one and Don Demeter homering for a buffer run. Which came in very handy as a Frank Howard made it a game again, blasting a two run shot off Johnny Wyatt but sadly, the Sens losing streak continued as Emerson grounded out.

This terrific weekend series concludes this afternoon, the Twins looking to save face. And another terrific pitching matchup of two excellent righthanders.

Wilson set the Twins down in order. Bottom 1, McAuliffe and Wert singled by Chance recovered to escape unscathed. Top 2, Bob Allison walked with one out. Versalles doubled him to third. Rollins fried to shallow right, Allison holding. He the scored as a Carew reached on an infield single. Detroit jumped ahead in the 3rd. Earl Wilson, one of the very best hitting pitchers sent one over the auxiliary scoreboard to tie the game. McAulliffe and Wert again singled for 1st and 3rd. Gates Brown walked to load them and Kaline smashed one the hot the crowd on its feet, yet alas, hit it to the deepest part of the part managing a sac fly and the lead. Tony Oliva tied the game with his 4th if the season, going deep into the upper deck in right. The Tigers did manage one more rally against Chance, putting 2 on in the 6th only to have Freehan ground out. Chance then tamed the Bengals, punching out 9 of the last 10 he faced sending the game into overtime. Wilson allowed only one single after the Oliva homer, set the visitors down in order in the 10th. Jim Perry came in in relief in the 10th and worked around a leadoff walk. Top 11, Killebrew walked and Ted Uhlaender pinch ran. He put his legs to good us, flying around the bases on a triple by Bob Allison. Save Wickersham relieved allowing Allison to score on single by Zolio. Perry once again walked the leadoff batter in the last of the 11th but a fly ball and two whiffs gave the duke to the Twins.

Those of the 9,000 in attendance are settled as the Halos look to square the day and the series before heading to Baltimore. Their task is a tough one, facing Sonny Siebert, the hard luck loser in his first start. Mexican import, Jorge Rubio goes for the west coast team.

Top 1, red hot Jim Fregosi singled and did the next batter, Jay Johnstone. Sonny recovered to whiff the next two. The Indians got runners to 2nd and 3rd in each of the first two innings just to leave them there. Top 4, the Cherubs loaded the bases on a hit, error and a free pass only to see it go down the drain when Knoop fanned. Bottom 5, Siebert reached on an error, Davalillo singled and Alvis walked to load the bases we nobody out. Hinton looked at a third strike bringing up Fred Whitfield. Fred sliced one that Fregosi dove to snag then flip to third to complete the double play. Bottom six the home team would not be denied. Wagner walked, a sims singled and Gus Gil reached when Rubio fumbled his sac bunt attempt. Larry Brown was next but two pitches in, Cal Drummond who was calling balls and strikes, ran him from the game. I doubt Joe Adcock got a good explanation either. Lee Maye came on to resume the at bat and ripped a single to right scoring a pair, pitting Cleveland up 2. Siebert bunted the runners up a base to which Rigney ordered an intentional walk to Davalillo. Pete Cimino came on to try to snuff the rally. Alvis hit into a fielders choice, but Hinton picked up the runners, plating a pair with a single to center. Siebert cruised until the 9th when Don Mincher reached him for his third round tripper. When Siebert walked the next 2,Adcock brought in Bob Allen who settled the matter getting three outs in the air, putting this on the left column for the home team

Two slugfests highlighted the first two games of this series that these teams split. Both looking for that edge that comes in winning the first game of a twin bill. Luis Tiant, the a Cuban fire baller faces crafty lefty Marcellino Lopez in this battle.

Top 1, first batter, the Angels take the lead as Paul Schaal drives one into the seats for his second JPK Er of the series and the season. The home club tried to answer back putting 2 on via the single but were left there. Tiant meanwhile settled in by tossing six more scoreless frames, the only serious trouble coming in the 4th on a lead off double by Fregosi. Luis the fanned the side to erase the issue. Bottom 3, the Indians tied the game as Rocky Colavito singled in the run. Bottom 5, the Ohio boys shot into the lead as Looie opened with double. It looked like he would be stranded there as Alvis and Davalillo made out but Chuck Hinton singled in Tiant. Colavito sent Hinton to third on his second hit and Chuck scored on a single by Joe Azcue. Top 8, Tiant got the first 2,running his out streak to 12. Len Gabrielson singled and Schaal walked bringing up Fregosi, who has been red hot in this series. Jimmy singled in the run chasing Schaal to third. But both remained there while Johnstone grounded out. Mgr Joe Adcock, with a depleted bullpen and another game on tap, left Tiant in to close it out which he did aplomb, giving the home club the edge in the series.
