The Kansas City A’s roared into the Motor City promptly putting up a 4 stop off Mickey Lolich in the 2nd highlighted by a long ball by Ramon Webster. Jim Nash had a easy three innings but Norm Cash and Mickey Stanley went deep to tie the game in the 4th. A pair of doubles in the 6th chased Nash from the game and proved to be the winning margin as the Bengals took the opener.

After scoring 6 in the opener, the White Sox doubled their pleasure with 12, registering 4 runs in three consecutive innings, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th pounding Steve Barber and Fred Talbot. Cisco Carlos tossed six shutout innings in his second Major League start garnering his first win in the bigs, giving the Sox a sweep of the doubleheader while keeping pace with the first place Red Sox.
Two flame throwing lefty came out a blazing, matching series and strikeouts over the first three innings. Then the Sox broke the stymie with a pair of runs in the 4th and 5th off Downing giving Gary Peters plenty of run support as he combined with Bib Locker on a three hit shutout.

Poor Dick Nold never had a chance against the potent Bosox lineup, even the juggled game 2 order. 7 Sox had multiple hit games (19 Boston safety’s in all) and 5 drove in runs totaling 10. All in support of Jerry Stephenson’s seven workmanlike innings and a couple of seldom used lefty’s finished up. The Nats avoided the doubleheader whitewash when they nicked Stephenson for a rally in his last inning of work.

NOTES: Interesting that with 19 hits, only one by the Sox was for extra basss, Yastrzemski homer. He is now 8 behind Roger Maris to all time single season leader. Carl has 25 games to accomplish the feat. Only member of the Hub to go hitless was catcher Mike Ryan. Even pitcher Jerry Stephenson had two safety’s.
A very tight contest thru 6 innings, the oaky thing separating the two teams was a Carl Yastrzemski home run. The Sox then broke the game open off Darrell Knowles when the flood gates opened thanks to a miscue by Dick Nen, culminating with a Ken ‘Hawk’ Harrelson big fly. When Dave Morehead tired , fireman Johnny Wyatt got the last 6 outs to notch this one onto the Beantown ledger.
