An error by Bert Campaneris gifted a run to the home club which turned out to be the difference as the Red Sox won all three in the series. Gary Bell went 8 strong, stingingly allowing three hits before Sparky Lyle slammed the door. Jim Nash, arguably the Athletics best pitchers lost a heartbreaker.

Pete Ward went deep in the 6th off Sonny Siebert and that line run stood up until the bottom of the 9th when Mgr Eddie Stanley chose to go for a double play (infield back) with runners on 1st and 3rd thus allowing the tying run to score. Top 11 the Chisox reverted to their old moniker of Go-Go-Sox as Tommy McCraw sped home from 1st with the winning run.
