After spotting the visiting Birds a single rally in the initial inning, the Chisox put up 5 unanswered runs then held on as a Tommy John stumbled in the 6th. Just like the opener, the other ace reliever, Bob Locker went three shutout innings giving the Southsiders the sweep.

A nice quiet game for three innings turned into a Donnybrook as both teams erupted for 5 run innings, the latter almost squandering the full Chisox lead. The on,y difference was the Pale Hose was able to sneak across one extra run in a previous inning. Neither starter acquitted themselves well but the ageless wonder Hoyt Wilhelm kelts his former team at bay allowing the hone club to snag the opening game of the twin bill.

After McDowell was pinch hit for, Ed Connolly coughed up four more curtosy of long balls by Willie Horton and Bill Freehan providing the firepower to sweep the invading Indians.

A scoreless fame through six innings, Detroit finally solved Stan Williams for a pair of runs. The Cleveland club nicked Denny McLain for a run and Manager Mayo Smith brought in Mike Marshall to preserve the slim lead. But it was not to be as Tony Horton tied the game. Bottom 8 with Sonny Siebert on, the sure handed centerfielders Vic Davalillo muffed a fly ball allowing the winning run to score.

Jim Perry was the grateful recipient of such offensive support guiding the visiting Twins to their third win in four in NY, losing his shutout like many others have, a home run off the bat of Mickey Mantle.
