The Twins muscled up for two homers in the 4th en route to an early 3-0 lead off Phil Ortega. Jim Kaat rode 6 shutout innings into the 7th when backup catcher Doug Camilli tied the game by going yard. It seems like each of his 5 homers were game changers. The game stayed tied into the 13th when Frank Howard did what he is paid to do, sending home the faithful with a walkoff two run homer.

The Yankees were the polar opposite of their beloved nickname in this game scratching out single runs off Angel starter Rickey Clark to snag a 2-0 lead. Bill Monbouquette nursed the lead thru 7 shutout innings until the Cherubs halved the lead. But the lefty-righty bullpen combo of Steve Hamilton and Dooley Womack sealed the deal putting this one in the left hand column of the ledger for the Yankees.

NOTES: Another masterpiece from the dynamic right arm of Looey Tiant. His 16 punch outs is just one sky of the most this year held by his teammate Sam McDowell (6-9) and Beantowner Jim Lonborg (7-23). It was the 11th time Tiant had double digit whiffs in a game. Jose’ Azcue gad six RBIs in the doubleheader. Vern Fuller went deep in both games. Bill Voss got his first hit of the season. On the dubious side if stars, Tommy Agee has whiffed in 12 straight games.

An old fashioned slobber knocker broke out at Cominsky in game 1 of a twi-night doubleheader. The Indians sent 10 to the plate in the top of the 3rd scoring 6 culminating in a grand slam by Ver Fuller staking Sudden Sam to a big lead….Which he almost gave all back as the Pale Hose sent 10 of their own in a rally featuring a pair of two run homers. Max Alvis increased the lead the very next inning which was matched three innings later by the Sox. But the Tribe put the Chisox out of their misery with a three run blast by Jose’ Azcue securing the opener for the visitors.

The Twins jumped all over Frank Bertaina as the first 4 hitters had safeties and all tolled, sent 8 to the plate notching 5 runs highlighted by a Harmon Killebrew blast. But the Nats fought back, culminating in a game tying two run homer by chief Twins antagonizer Frank Howard. Jay Johnstone was the center of this win, unfortunately, it was to the benefit of the New York Yankees. Bottom 1, with two on, Steve Whitaker sent a knuckling line drive to center that Johnstone simply muffed and that was the only tally of the game. Luckily, that’s all Fritz Peterson would need as he spun a neat five hitter, going the distance to warn a split of the twin bill.
