Tony Horton gave old southpaw Curt Simmons a rude welcome, blasting a three run Homer in the initial inning. But Sudden Sam McDowell could not stand posterity, getting nicked for single runs in the 1st and 2nd before giving it all away in the 4th as Aurilio Rodriguez doubled home the go ahead runs. Curt Simmons recovered to go 5 good innings before faltering, getting picked up by the exceptional rescue job by Pete Cimino giving the Cherubs the opening game of the series.
