It’s the rubber game of this three game set. The eternal prospect Nick Willhite gets the ball from Bill Rigney to face Jim Lonborg who searches for his fourth duke.
Sox are held scoreless in the 1st. Bottom one, the Sultan of West Coast Swat, Paul Schaal, picked on the second offering by Lonborg, sending it into the left field seats for 1-0 lead. Bottom 2, the Halos doubled the lead when Jimmie Hall walked and Mincher singled. Buck Rodgers snuck one into the outfield for an RBI. Bottom 3, with Lonborg clearly not having it, gave up a single to Fregosi the walked Reichardt one out later. Hall skied you center but Mincher lazered one over the of Conigliaro, eluding the right fielder long enough for 2 runs to score and Big Don ending up on 3rd. Willhite, for his part, Houdinied his way out of jams in each of the first 5 innings. Two singled in the 2nd got snuffed out by a twin killing, then in the 4th, two singles sandwiched a walk for sacks full with nobody out. Willhite the fanned the next three to escape. In fact, Nick the Quick punched out the side the next inning for good measure. The Cherubs missed out on a golden opportunity when the wasted a lead off double by Fregosi. Top 6, Yaz singled but Willhite righted himself to get the next 2. Petrocelli singled and Gibson walked to load Em up. Mike Andrews ripped a grounds rule double getting the Sawx on the board. Tony Horton pinch hit for Lonborg and Rigney countered with Pete Cimino. Bad move as Horton blasted a three run shot for a one run Boston lead. Top 7., Bill Kelso walked the bases loaded but got a lazy fly ball to end the inning. Veteran Don McMahon shut the door to give the series to the visitors.
Lonborg got his fourth win despite his under-par outing. Joe Foy has an 11 game hitting streak, in fact hitting safely in every game he played. Fregosi had a big game for the Angels breaking 1-17 skid. Jimmy Hall is the current concern, enduring a 0-21 slump.
