The Orioles fly into Motown for the weekend, looking to build on their recent momentum. They have their work cut out for themselves, as the face a Mickey Lolich who has been brilliant. Steve Barber is his opposition, coming off his best start of the season.
Top 1, the pesky Luis Aparicio drew a walk and moved to 3rd on a two out single by Brooks Robinson. Woody Held drove one into left for the first run and Davy Johnson and Paul Blair followed suit giving Barber a cozy 3-0 lead. Top 2, Aparicio was at it again, as he dropped one into the second row of the bleachers after a Blefary single bumping the lead to 5-0. Barber faired better, putting up goose eggs thru 4. Top 5, Blefary walked and Frank Robinson went upper deck off of George Korrince who took over for Lolich in the 4th. Kaline singled in a run in the 5th, the first crack in the armor of Barber. Bottom 7, the Bengals pecked away gathering 2 more on RBI singles by McAuliffe and Kaline. Gates Brown got them one closer and a McAuliffe solo shot brought it to 7-5 but that would be it as Eddie Watt slammed the door shut dropping the Tigers into a two game losing streak.
