The back end of a short two game set. Twins looking to square the series with the Bronx team. Two struggling righties get after it in this one,
Boswell started out on fire whiffing the side in the 1st. Talbot set the Twins down in order in the bottom half. Top 2 and error and a walk set up the Yanks nicely but nothing came of it. Talbot was perfect again in the bottom half. Top 3, Talbot drew a walk and the Punch and Judy hitting Horace Clarke put the visitors ahead but ‘ punching’ one into the seats in right, Ron Clark, still subbing for Rich Rollins, teed off on Talbot to halve the lead. The Pinstripers got to Boswell again in the 5th as Dave was not able to abide by the strike zone walking Clarke. Tresh followed by lashing one over the head of Kosco in right, plating Hoss and ending up on third. Mantle was walked somewhat intentionally setting up the DP which they almost got as Whitaker grounded to short, just barely beating the relay for the fourth run. The Twins nickel Talbot for another run in the 6th, pinch hitter Sandy Valdespino blasting one out to right. Bottom 7, the home club crawled within one as Allison singled, advanced on a groundout and scored on a Russ Nixon single. That was enough for Ralph Houk as he brought in Steve Hamilton to face Clark, inducing a twin killing to preserve the slim lead. The Tanks added an insurance run off Ron Kline , Bill Robinson doubled and Billy Bryan picked a good time FOR his first hit and RBI. The Twins erupted in the bottom of the 8th, three consecutive singles produced the tying run. Versalles lined out but Killebrew and Allison followed with knocks to put the Twinkies up 2. Al Worthington came on to preserve to leaf and well…. Tresh singled and advance on an error by Allison. Mantle singled him home to make a game of it. Worthington settled down to get the next two but left a hanger in Charley Smith’s wheelhouse that even he could not miss giving the Yankx a 2 run lead. Dooley Womack came on for the save and was greeted rudely by Ron Clark who went deep for the second time in the game but, alas, it was where it would end.
