It’s the battle of the first place as the second place Tigers face the league leading White Sox. 1966 twenty game winner McLain, already on his way to another milestone with three wins face ace southpaw Gary Peters who looks for his third victory.
Peters started out unable to find the strike zone, walking the first two Bengals before a pep talk from catcher JC Martin squared him away. Sox in their half loaded the bases on two singles and a walk but Ken Berry grounded out, snuffing out the rally. Tigers put two more on in the 2nd to no avail. Bottom 4, Tommy McCraw singled and timed McLain’s delivery perfectly and swiped second. Berry then singled him in for the games first run. Peters handled the visitors, his only issue was with Larry Napp’s strike zone and he issued six free passes. The Sox broke open the game in 8th, Pete Ward singled and Berry found the front row of the left field seats putting the game on ice.
