After splitting a four game set in Charm City, the A’s make their way westward, stopping off in Detroit trying to end the road trip on a high note. The home club looks to continue their excellent start to the season.Nthing doing in the first by both teams, Top 2 Roger Repoz one bounced the seats in right for a grounds rule double. Ed Charles singled him home to open the scoring. Tim Talton, getting the spot start behind the dish, ripped one in the gap in left center that rolled all the way to the wall, chasing Charles home and winding up on third with a stand up triple. Dick Green left him stranded, watching strike three all the way into Freehan’s mitt. Sparma then gifted the A’s their third run, uncorking a wild pitch, Talton scampering home. The Bengals got one back immediately as Norm Cash singled and with two outs Ray Oyler poked one over Gosger’s head in left for a two bagger. Things settled down until the bottom of the 5th when Freehan powered his second home making this a one run game. Detroit tied it up in the 6th, Kaline doubled with 2 outs and Jim Northrup singled him in, top 7, Charles picked up his second single and Talton walked setting the stage for a rally. Green flied to right. Sensing a chance for runs, Mgr Al Dark sent lefty slugger Ramon Webster to pinch hit, and Ramon almost made the skipper look like a genius but alas, Kaline corralled his high fly in deep right center. Bottom half of the inning, newly recalled Roberto Rodriguez came on and the a Tigers greeted him rudely. Freehan singled and Ray Oyler, who barely hits his weight, snuck one down the left field line giving the hone club their first lead. Jerry Lumpe and Dick McAuiliffe singled and Dark saw enough bringing in Paul Lindblad to clean up the mess. He got Wert on a fly, whiffed Gates Brown and got Kaline to roll to second. Larry Sherry came on to get six outs, notching his first save of the year.
