Start of a 2 game set in DC. Boy do the Nats need a W in the worst way. Veteran Cuban hurler Camilo Pascual returnsto the Nations Capital hoping to stabilize the starting rotation. He faces southpaw Dennis Bennett.
Pascual came of firing, whiffing the first two batters then left a hanging curve right in Carl Yastrzemski’s wheelhouse, putting the Sox up 1-0. The Sens got that back immediately as Eddie Brinkman & Tim Cullen singled. Hank Allen followed with a base hit scoring Brinkman but Cullen got cut down trying for third. Top 2, George Thomas singled and advanced on a wild pitch. George Scott returning to the lineup after 4 games, doubled for the lead. Bottom 2, Cap Peterson singles and two outs later scored from second on a knock by Paul Casanova. Neither team put up a tally in the 3rd but the top of the 4th, three singles loaded the bases and Dennis Bennett drove in a pair for the lead. Hondo knock in one in the 5th making it a one run contest. Mgr Dick Williams sent Bennett out for the 6th and quickly regretted it. Hawk Harrelson singled and McMullen drew walk, making a pitching change necessary. Casanova bounced out moving the runners up. Bob Chance pinch hit and sent one to right. 3rd base coach Eddie Yost sent Harrelson who was dead at the plate. Twice now Thomas gunned down a potential run, this one would have tied the game. The Beantowners nicked the DC club’s relievers for runs in the 8th and 9th, Russ Gibson doubling a second time for one and Don Demeter homering for a buffer run. Which came in very handy as a Frank Howard made it a game again, blasting a two run shot off Johnny Wyatt but sadly, the Sens losing streak continued as Emerson grounded out.
