Two slugfests highlighted the first two games of this series that these teams split. Both looking for that edge that comes in winning the first game of a twin bill. Luis Tiant, the a Cuban fire baller faces crafty lefty Marcellino Lopez in this battle.
Top 1, first batter, the Angels take the lead as Paul Schaal drives one into the seats for his second JPK Er of the series and the season. The home club tried to answer back putting 2 on via the single but were left there. Tiant meanwhile settled in by tossing six more scoreless frames, the only serious trouble coming in the 4th on a lead off double by Fregosi. Luis the fanned the side to erase the issue. Bottom 3, the Indians tied the game as Rocky Colavito singled in the run. Bottom 5, the Ohio boys shot into the lead as Looie opened with double. It looked like he would be stranded there as Alvis and Davalillo made out but Chuck Hinton singled in Tiant. Colavito sent Hinton to third on his second hit and Chuck scored on a single by Joe Azcue. Top 8, Tiant got the first 2,running his out streak to 12. Len Gabrielson singled and Schaal walked bringing up Fregosi, who has been red hot in this series. Jimmy singled in the run chasing Schaal to third. But both remained there while Johnstone grounded out. Mgr Joe Adcock, with a depleted bullpen and another game on tap, left Tiant in to close it out which he did aplomb, giving the home club the edge in the series.
