The Athletics of Kansas City travel east looking to get their season on track visiting Charm City to challenge the Orioles. Rookie phenom Tom Phoebus looks for his second win against Jim ‘Catfish’ Hunter who pitched brilliantly in a no decision.

The A’s wasted a double by Rick Monday to open the game. It would be the only hit for the A’s off of Phoebus until one out in the 7th. In fact the only thing smudge in a string of 18 outs on Tom’s record was a lead off walk in the 4th. Jim Hunter himself was almost perfect, just an error in the first four innings. Bottom 5, it came crashing down as Boog Powell took Hunter deep, a 400 ft shot put the Birds up. Bottom 6, Hunter lost the plate issuing 2 one out walks. Brooks Robby “legged” out an infield single to load the bases. Hunter issued a free pass to Powell forcing in a run, still miffed over plate umpire Al Salerno’s minuscule string zone. Curt Blefary lifted a fly to right, deep enough for Paul Blair to waltz home without a throw. Too 7, the A’s mounted their only threat, putting 2 on before whiffing the next two to keep the shutout intact. Bottom Andy Etchavarren singled and Phoebus bunted him along. Luis Aparicio doubled to plate the run. Squeezed again by Salerno, Frank Robby walked and Brooks Robby reached on an error to load the bases again. Leaving Hunter in one batter too long, Powell blasted one over the head of Repoz in center who played it into a three run triple. Mgr Eddie Lopat finally yanked a fried Catfish replacing him with Bob Duliba who escaped the inning. Bottom 8, Etchabarren singled again and Tom Phoebus slugged his first homer sealing the deal on a 9-0 victory.
