The Windy City crew flies into the Capital see if the can continue their dominance over the Senators since they swept three at home the previous weekend. Two struggling pitchers try to right their seasons in this tilt.
Richert bolted out of the gate strong, getting the first 9 he faced. The Sens found a taste of success against Buzhardt, leaving 2 on in the first. Last of the second, Ken McMullen singled and was chased to third by a Paul Casanova foible. Richert couldn’t help his own cause but was picked up by Eddie Brinkman who legged out an infield hit for the first run, Bottom 3, Freddy Valentine walked and Frank Howard found one to his liking, putting home club up 3-0. Top 4, Don Buford scorched a liner up the gap and scooted all the way to third. Berry grounded to third, .McMullen holding the runner, Agee was intentionally passed setting up a opportunity. Richert didn’t get it but did leave them stranded. Bottom 5, a single and a walk gave Paul Casanova a Chance but he could not deliver. Richert kept the Birds off the board thru 6 but Pete Ward drove one into the seats in right to open the 7th. Bernie Allen then booted one then Duane Josephson and Tommy McCraw singled to fill the bases. Manager Gil Hodges brought in Casey Cox who induced a ground ball that looked that it could be two but sure handed Ed Brinkman booted it letting in a run. Smokey Burgess pinch hit, lifting lifted a sac fly to right to tie the game on what should have been the third out. Buford lined out but Ken Berry laced one down the line for 2 more and the lead. Hoyt Wilhelm threw three perfect innings to grab the win.
