In a rematch from the first week of the season, the Angels leave sunny California for Motown. Lefty Marcellino Lopez takes the hill hoping to avenge his miserable first start. Earl Wilson looks to add another to his win totals after beating the Twins.
The Halos stirred up some dust in the first when Jay Johnstone legged out a three bagger but got left hanging. Lopez whiffed the side in his turn. Bottom 2, Al Kaline singled leading off and one batter later, Bill a Freehan filled the homer column of the stat sheet with a two run blast. Bottom 4, Jim Borthruo doubled to right center and raced home on a Freehan single. Two walks loaded the bases but the Tigers couldn’t add to the lead letting Lopez off the hook. Things were quiet thru the middle innings, the Angels mounting a promising threat in the 7th when Don Mincher and Jimmy Hall singled but Earl Wilson buckled down to put the fire out. Top 8, Jim Fregosi broke the shutout with his first bomb of the season. Bottom 8, the Bengals put this one away off Pete Camino. A one out walk to Oyler followed by singles by Dick McAuliffe and Earl Wilson put the lead back at 3. One out later Don Wert collected his 5th RBI. The final nail came off the bat of Gates Brown who launched a three run jack making the final 8-1. Wilson went the distance picking up his second W of the young campaign
