The Motown boys try to stay perfect, sending Joe Sparma to the bump against lefty ace Jim Kaat. Twins looking to avenge yesterday’s defeat break out early, get the jump as Cesear Tovar legs out a triple and scores on a sac fly by Tony Oliva. Tigers roared back in the 3rd, Bill Freehan and Ray Oyler singled to get things going. Sparma bunted them along making it easier to score on Jake Wood’s double. Two batters later, Al Kaline brought him home making it 3-1. Sparma could not stand success, a walk and single set up Oliva, who did not disappoint, doubling into the gap in right center, tying the game. The contest stayed tied thru regulation although each team had chances. Twins loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 4th but Rich Rollins fanned. Two more stranded in the 6th by the home squad. The Bengals got two singles from Freehan and Oyler again but were left hanging. Twins looked poised to win it in the last of the 9th, Walt Bond singled and Tovar took one between the numbers putting two on nobody out. Mayo Smith saw enough of Larry Sherry, bringing on Orlando Pena. Rollins once again spoiled the party tapping into a 1-6-3 DP and Oliva flying out to the warning track in center. Bottom 11, Pena sailing along gettin six straight, gave up his first hit to Earl Battey leading off. Dave Boswell pinch ran and used his legs to circle the bases, chased home by Versalles triple for the win. Detroit falls from the unbeatens while Twins share their record at 2.
