The Birds fly to the Midwest to engage the A’s showcasing a pair of young righthanders. A’s treated in bottom of 1 putting two on with one out but Ed Charles bounced into a DP. Same in bottom of 2, a twin killing ruining the chance to score. Bottom 3, Krausse drew a walk and stole second. One out later, Mike Hershberger singled, driving Lew in. A single and a walk loaded the pads. The threat was snuffed out at the plate with Hershberger nailed at the plate trying to score on a great throw by Frank Robby. The Orioles evened the score in the 4th as the Robinson’s singled putting runners on the corners. Powell ripped one up the middle, Krausse slowing it down enough to just get on with a run scoring. The A’s went back on top on consecutive doubles by Campaneris and Hershberger. A double by Paul Blair, driven in by Brooks deadlocked the game again. Top 7, a one out double by Andy Etchabarren put the lead run in scoring position. Hank Bauer sent Mike Epstein to pinch hit for the pitcher and rewarded the skipper driving home the go ahead run. Top 8, the Birds had the sacks filled but failed to score as B.Robby was cut down at the plate by Hershberger. The A’s had a chance to tie, but Danny Cater’s double was wasted. Top 9, Tony Pierce and Paul Lindblad let the game get out of hand allowing for to plate, the big hits being a double by Aparicio and a triple by Blair.
