Detroit showed early that they enjoyed opening the season in the warm west coast weather wasting no time in getting on the board in the top of the first. A one out Tracewski single and a two out Kaline double got the game started. Try as they may, the Bengals left two in scoring position in both the 2nd and the 4th. They broke thru in the 5th, Don Wert singled and light hitting Dick Tracewski tucked one around the foul pole in left padding the lead. Denny McLain cruised thru 5, just 2 walks marred his work. The Halos broke Thur in the 6th, pinch hitter Len Gabrielson walked and two batters later came around to score on Jimmy Hall single. The Tigers had chances in the 8th and 9th, leaving two on in each inning. Bottom 9 with Orlando Pena on in relief, Don Mincher sent one into the right center gap for a two bagger. Advancing to third on a grounder, he scored easily on a Buck Rodgers single. Last hope Bobby Knoop whiffed allowing the visitors to exhale while capturing the win.
